ACB appoints Umar Gul as Afghanistan’s Bowling Coach

The former Pakistan pacer, Umar Gul has been named as the new bowling coach of the Afghanistan National team. Gul’s initial contract is till the end of 2022. He will start with Afghanistan’s upcoming limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe in June.

Gul who had earlier replaced Abdur Razzaq as the bowling coach of Quetta Gladiators in the PSL last year to kickstart his post-playing career was employed by the ACB as its bowling consultant during a training & preparation camp in the UAE in April. The former Pakistan pacer worked with the national team’s pacers & his efficiency in the camp has led to his appointment as Afghanistan’s bowling coach on a permanent basis. At the same camp, former Pakistan captain Younis Khan was roped in as a batting consultant.

Umar Gul had “worked with the fast bowlers in our national line-up and considering his effectiveness in the camp as well as based on the need, it was decided to offer him a permanent contract as the national team’s bowling coach,” the board said in a statement.

Umar Gul who has retired from all forms of cricket in October 2020 has played 47 Tests (163 wickets at 34.06), 130 ODIs (179 wickets at 29.34), and 60 T20Is (85 wickets at 16.97) for Pakistan between 2003 and 2016.

In a recent interview Umar Gul had revealed why he turned to coach, he said, “I wanted to stay close to the game, be in the field, so I told myself: why not coaching? I gave myself a long, hard look, and thought about my temperament.

“…and I realized I have always been generous about helping my colleagues when working in the nets – giving them tips, listening to others, chipping in with my knowledge. I wasn’t just bowling but learning a lot around the art of bowling.”

The Afghanistan Cricket team are touring Zimbabwe for white ball series comprising three ODIs & three T20Is to be played between June 4 & 14 in Harare. The Afghanistan Cricket team have departed for Zimbabwe on Wednesday afternoon. The ODI series will be a part of the World Cup Super League.
