Sri Lanka’s swash-buckling all-rounder Angelo Mathews & Bangladesh wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim are among the three nominees for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for May 2022. Besides the duos, Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando has also been named for the prestigious award.
Mathews played a crucial role during Sri Lanka’s series win over Bangladesh. He finished the series as the highest run-scorer with 344 runs in two Tests, including two centuries. The standout batter came close to his double ton but unfortunately fell one run short of a double ton after getting dismissed for 199 in the first Test. In the second Test, Mathews registered another century and remained unbeaten on 145. His heroics with the bat made him the perfect contender for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for May.
Meanwhile, Mushfiqur Rahim ended as the second-highest run-scorer of the series by amassing 303 runs during the two-match Test series. Just like Matthews, Rahim too racked up two centuries against Sri Lanka. He also became the first Bangladesh player to score 5000 Test runs. Rahim achieved the feat during the first Test. Mushfiqur Rahim’s stellar performances made him a deserving candidate for the Player of the Month Award for May.
Another Sri Lankan batter who was successful in making the cut to the ICC Player of the Month nominees is Fernando. The star pacer has finished as the highest wicket-taker during the two-match test series against Bangladesh. Fernando ended the first Test by registering a three-wicket haul while in the second Test he returned 10 wickets. The pacer amazed everyone with his fiery pace by scalping crucial wickets & guiding his team to a stellar series win over home side Bangladesh. Sri Lankan players put their every effort to win the Test series against Bangladesh by a 1-0 score.
