Ashwin tests positive for COVID-19, misses flight for England on June 16

India’s all-rounder R Ashwin has tested positive for COVID-19 & thus hasn’t traveled to England for the Edgbaston Test with the first group which left on June 16. Ashwin is currently serving the mandatory quarantine period & will join the squad after meeting all the required protocols.

“Ashwin hasn’t traveled with the squad to the UK as he has tested positive for Covid-19 before departure,” a BCCI source told PTI. “But we are hopeful that he will recover well in time before the Test match starts on July 1. However, he might miss the practice game against Leicestershire.”

Though it’s expected that Ashwin will recover on time for the Test but he might miss the four-day practice games against Leicestershire starting on June 24. The Indian Test squad that departed for England on June 16 reached Leicester & has begun their training under the supervision of bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour.

Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer have reached London after completing the T20I series against South Africa & will now travel to Leicester on Tuesday. Rahul who was going to lead India’s T20I squad in the South Africa T20Is suffered a groin injury ahead of the first T20I. As a result, he was ruled out of the five-match T20I series with Rishabh Pant stepping in as Captain for the series.

The Ireland-bound T20I squad under VVS Laxman will depart for Dublin on June 23 or 24 as the T20I squad has been given a three-day rest before the series. India is scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland in Dublin, on June 26 and 28. India’s Test team will take on England for the fifth rescheduled Test in Edgbaston starting from July 1 to complete the five-match Test series held in 2021 which was stopped in between due to the outbreak of COVID-19 within the Indian Contingent. The series is currently led by India with a 2-1 score. After the Edgbaston Test, India and England will play each other in three ODIs and three T20Is.
