AUS vs AFG, T20 WC 2022: Defending Champions Australia displayed a great show to register a nervy four-run win over Afghanistan to keep their playoff hopes alive. Now they would hope that Sri Lanka beat England in their final Group 1 clash at the SCG on Saturday if they want to qualify for the semi-final.

Maxwell-Stoinis 53 run stand guided Aussies to a defendable total

Batting first Australia got off to a poor start as they lost their opener Green early for just 3 runs, reducing Australia to 22-1 in 2.1 overs. But Green’s dismissal didn’t affect Warner on the other end who fired all the cylinders right from the first ball he had faced. Warner joined hands with Marsh & the duo carried Australia’s innings forward. However, after playing a valorous knick of 25 off 18 balls Warner was dismissed off Haq’s delivery reducing Australia to 50-2 in 5,2 overs.

Marsh on the other end was in no mood to give up, he joined hands with Stoinis to keep their scoreboard ticking. Marsh scored 45 runs off 30 balls with three fours & two sixes before getting dismissed off Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman’s delivery reducing Australai to 86-4. However, Stoinis then joined hands with new batter Maxwell & the duo accelerated Australia’s innings. They stitched a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket before Rashid Khan dismissed Stoinis to end their blooming stand. Stoinis went back after scoring 25 runs off 21 balls.

After Stoinis’s dismissal wickets kept falling at one end but Maxwell was going strong at the other. He took Afghanistan bowlers to cleaners & stayed unbeaten on 54 off 32 balls in an innings braced with six fours & two sixes. Aussies tailend failed to deliver & ended up scoring single-digit scores. In the end, Australia ended their innings at 168 in the allotted 20 overs. For Afghanistan, the pick of bowlers was Naveen-ul-Haq (3-21) and Fazalhaq Farooqi (2-29).

Afghan’s middle order succumbed to Australia’s fiery pace attack

In reply, Afghanistan got off to a poor start as they lost the opener, Usman Ghani, in the third over, reducing Afghanistan to 15-1. However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz showed some resistance & scored 30 runs off 17 balls before getting dismissed off Richardson’s delivery reducing Afghanistan to 40-2 in 5.3 overs. New batter Gulbaddin joined hands with Ibrahim XZadran to take Afghanistan’s innings forward. The duo stitched a crucial 59-run stand for the third wicket. Gulabdin amassed 39 runs off 23 balls embraced with three fours & two sixes. On the other hand, Zadran returned with scores of 26 off 33 balls with two fours. But the moment the duo tried to open their arms Maxwell run-out Gulabdin to cut off their wings. After Gulabdin’s dismissal, there was a collapse for Afghanistan as they lost four wickets within a span of four runs, reducing Afghanistan from 99-4 to 103-6.

In the end, Rashid Khan joined hands with Rasooli & stitched 45-run stand for the seventh wicket to keep Afghanistan’s winning hopes alive. With the equation reading 21 off 6 balls, Rashid Khan smashed two fours & one six in the last over to take them near victory however still fell short by four runs. As a result, Afghanistan finished their innings at 164-7 in the alotted 20 overs. For Australia, the pick of the bowlers was Hazlewood (2-33) & Zampa (2-22).
