AUS vs ENG 1st ODI: Clinical Australia beats England by 6 wickets to take 1-0 lead

AUS vs ENG 1st ODI: The ground of Adelaide Oval was lit with sixes & fours as the hosts chased a massive target of 288 runs within 47 overs. Dawid Malan’s magnificent 134 run-knock went in vain as Australia held their nerves & displayed an all-round show to clinch the fixture by six wickets.

The match unfolded with Australia winning the toss & electing to field first. Batting first England got off to a poor start as they lost their opener Salt (14) & Roy (6) along with J Vince (5) early in their innings reducing England to 31-3 in 7.1 overs. After suffering major jolts Billings (17 off 22) then joined hands with Jos Buttler (29 off 34) to stitch a 46-run stand. However soon the duo was sent packing to reduce England to 118-5 in 24 overs. Then came Dawid Malan on the crease who acted as a savior for England’s submerging ship. He scored 134 runs off 128 balls with 12 fours & 4 sixes. He got valuable support from Willey who played a brief cameo of unbeaten 34 runs off 40 balls. On the back of Malan’s blistering knock, England finished their innings at 287 in 50 overs at Adelaide Oval. For Australia Adam Zampa & pat Cummins starred with the ball by registering three-wicket hauls each.

Chasing a target of 288 runs, Australia got off to a blastic start with openers David Warner & Travis Head stitching a rewarding 147-run stand for the opening wicket. David Warner scored 86 runs off 84 balls with 10 fours while Travis Head scored 69 runs off 57 balls with 10 fours. However, their fiery stand was broken when Jordan dismissed Head in the 19.4 overs. Then came Steve Smith on the crease who made a mockery of England bowlers by smashing them all across the park. Steve along with Warner stitched a rewarding 200-run partnership in just 29 overs.

However, Warner’s ideal stint on the crease was ended when he was dismissed off David Willey’s delivery for 200 runs in 29th over. After the dismissal of the swashbuckling opener, Alex Carey played a crucial cameo of 21 runs off 28 balls before getting dismissed off Liam Dawson’s delivery. Smith was going strong at one end. He scored 80 runs off 78 balls with nine fours & one six to help Australia chase the target in 46.6

For England, David Willey starred with the ball by returning with figures of 2-51. Liam Dawson & Chris Jordan too supported them by scalping one wicket apiece.
