AUS vs NZ 3rd ODI: Australia retains Chappell Hadlee Trophy with a 3-0 win over NZ

AUS vs NZ 3rd ODI: Steven Smith’s 103-run knock accompanied by an on-point bowling attack helped Australia to sweep the Chappell-Hadlee ODI series by 3-0 with a 25-run nervy win in the final ODI in Cairns. In the chase of 268 runs, New Zealand was restricted to a meager 242 runs score.

Steve Smith powered Australia to a decent 268 runs total

The match was unveiled with Australia batting first & putting a decent total of 268 runs on board. Batting first Australia suffered a major jolt with their openers getting dismissed in the powerplay overs. Aaron Finch who was playing his last ODI after announcing his retirement couldn’t turn it special as he got castled by a straight delivery off Tim Southee for just five runs. Josh Inglis too couldn’t hit the straps & was sent packing after scoring just 10 runs in 16 balls. As a result, Australia was reduced to 16-2 within the powerplay overs.

Steven Smith then joined hands with Labuschagne & together the duo stitched a crucial 118-run stand to do the recovery for Australia. The duo mixed caution with aggression & kept smashing New Zealand bowlers for boundaries & sixes. However, soon their partnership was broken with Ferguson dismissing Labuschagne after scoring 52 runs off 78 balls.

However, Smith was going string at the other end by lofting some beautiful cover drive & pull shots. He soon reached his 12th ODI ton by hitting a massive six off Southee’s delivery. Soon New Zealand got the major breakthrough with Santner dismissing Smith in the 44th over. Smith went back after scoring a magnificent 105 runs off 131 balls.

Later, Alex Carey (42 off 43), Maxwell (14 off 8) & Cameron Green (25 runs off 12) kept belting the bowlers at the other end & helped Australia to finish their innings at 267 runs off 50 overs.

Trent Boult starred with the ball by returning with figures of 2-25. Southee, Ferguson, and Santner too contributed by scalping one wicket apiece.

Bowlers created havoc to restrict New Zealand from chasing the Target

In reply, New Zeaalnd got off to a wondrous start with Devon Conway & Finn Allen stitching a brisk 49-run stand. They displayed a great show of flick, pull & drive to get the better of the Australian pace trio of Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Cameron Green. However, in the 11th over, Abbott dismissed Conway followed by Allen prey to Green’s delivery in the 12th over.

Tom Latham tried to show some resistance but was sent packing for 10 runs followed by Mitchell for 16 runs. Kane Williamson who was trying to stabilize their innings too was run-out after scoring 27 runs off 56 balls. Australia was reeling for runs with their score read 112 for 5. Jimmy Neesham & Phillips then stitched a crucial 61-run stand to get New Zealand back on track. But it was Green who had the last laugh by dismissing Neesham in the 38th over for 36 runs off 34 balls.

Mitchell Santner (30 off 33 balls) & Glenn Phillips (47 off 53 balls) stitched another 50-plus stand to keep Black Caps alive in the chase. But when things were changing in their favor they lost the wicket of Phillips followed by Santner, reducing New Zealand to 230-8 in 46.2 overs. Starc once again struck in the last over to remove Ferguson(8) & Trent Boult (4), handing New Zealand a 25-run defeat.

Abbott, Green, and Starc shared seven scalps between them while Zampa and Hazlewood chipped in with a wicket each.
