AUS vs SL 1st Test: Travis Head (4-10) & Nathan Lyon (4-31) gleamed with the ball & led Australia to a spectacular ten wickets win over Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match Test series at Galle International Stadium on Friday. The sun shone brightly for Aussies who displayed an over-the-top show & outclassed Lankans in all the departments of the gameplay. It was their superb bowling efforts that helped to beat Sri Lanka & take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Earlier electing to bat first, Sri Lanka managed to put up 212 runs on board, thanks to the outstanding contribution from Niroshan Dickwella (58) & Angelo Matthews (39), and Dimuth Karunaratne (28) who helped their side to register a decent total on board. In the first innings, Nathan Lyon (5-90) starred with the ball while spinner Mitchell Swepson also scalped 3 wickets conceding 55 runs while Pacers Pat Cummins & Mitchell Starc scalped a single wicket each.
The Australian tribe commenced the second innings on a high note by amassing 321 runs & gaining a 109 runs lead. Cameron Green (77) & Usman Khawaja were the torch bearer for Australia who smashed crucial fifties to help Australia take a massive lead. Wicket-keeper Alex Carey also contributed with crucial 45 runs. Khawaja-Green’s 57-run stand along with Green & Carey’s 84-run stand were the highlights of Australia’s innings. However, except for the trio, none of the Aussie batsmen could actually deliver with the bat as Lankans kept scalping wickets at regular intervals.
For Sri Lanka, Spinner Ramesh Mendis (4-112), Asitha Fernando (2-37) & Jeffrey Vandersay (2-68) made crucial contributions by fetching wickets at regular intervals.
Heading into the third innings, the Aussies were a but of relaxed as they were already leading by 109 runs. Australian bowlers capitalized on their stellar batting performance with an on-point bowling show. They put on a stellar show with the ball to wrap Sri Lanka’s innings for 113 runs. Sri Lankan batters failed to chip in with big scores as expected Karunaratne none of their batters could reach even the 20-run mark.
The innings was completely controlled by Australian spinners who didn’t fail to create a mark with their lethal spin attack. Adding to the tally of his five-wicket haul, Nathan Lyon picked four more wickets to rattle Lankans batting order. Swepson too scalped two more wickets in the third innings with his tally coming to five wickets. What comes as a surprise for everyone was Travis Head’s exemplary bowling spell who returned with four wickets by giving away just 10 runs to end all hopes of winning for Australia.
With a target of just five runs to chase, Australians were almost standing near the winning podium. Australians chased the target without shedding a sweat & marched towards a glorious ten wickets win in style.
The second test between the two sides is scheduled to take place on 8th July 2022 at the Galle International Stadium.
