Andrew McDonald tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of their Sri Lanka Tour

Andrew McDonald’s stint as Australia’s head coach has been derailed before it has even begun. McDonald has tested positive for Covid-19 just hours before the team’s departure to Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Andrew McDonald was appointed to the position on a temporary basis for a tour of Pakistan in March, But this will be McDonald’s first series as a full-time Head Coach. Andrew McDonald’s will be kept in isolation for seven days in Melbourne while Australia’s touring squad has departed for Sri Lanka for their limited-overs tour, which will begin with the T20I series on June 7 in Colombo.

For the first T20I, assistant coach Michael Di Venuto will fill in the role of Andrew McDonald, with the head coach joining the squad in Colombo for the second T20I, only after testing negative for COVID-19. This tour is the first assignment for not only MC Donald but also former Test seamer Clint McKay who will be part of the coaching staff for the white-ball leg of the tour, joining Di Venuto and spin coach Sri Sriram.

The tour will also oversee former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori and ex Victoria and Melbourne Renegades assistant, Andre Borovec starting their stint as full-time assistant coaches in the two-Test series, beginning on June 29. Borovec will also coach Australia A for their matches against Sri Lanka A prior to the two-match Test series.

Earlier there have been weeks of suspense & uncertainty caused due to the significant power & fuel shortages in Sri Lanka. However, the SLC confirmed on Monday that the white-ball series, which will consist of three T20Is and five ODIs, will be played under lights as planned.

“There is no disruption in the schedule and the white ball games will be night or day-night affairs,” SLC secretary Mohan de Silva told Cricbuzz on Tuesday.

Later this week, Australia’s ODI and A teams will also depart for Sri Lanka. The three Twenty20 Internationals, five One-Day Internationals, and two Tests will begin on June 7 with the two-match T20I series.
