AUS vs SL 2022: Former Sri Lanka Pacer & Captain, Lasith Malinga has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s bowling strategy coach for their home white-ball series in Australia which gets underway on June 7 in Colombo.
“Malinga, during the tour, will support Sri Lanka’s bowlers, providing tactical insight and technical expertise to help the on-field execution of strategic plans,” SLC said via a press release.
Earlier this year in February, Malinga played a similar role when Sri Lanka toured Australia for five-match T20I series. Though Sri Lanka lost the series by 4-1, the bowlers did manage to restrict the run-flow to an extent. The highest total that Australia could score across the five T20Is was 164 for 6.
“Sri Lanka Cricket is confident that Malinga’s vast experience and renowned death-bowling expertise, especially in the T20 format, will help the team immensely going into this all-important series,” the release added.
Lasith Malinga is regarded as one of the best limited-overs fast bowlers in World Cricket. The fiercest pacer had pulled down curtains on his illustrious International Career in 2021. He was the leading wicket-taker in T20Is at the time with a tally of 107 in 84 outings, before being overtaken by Shakib Al Hasan.
Malinga has also enjoyed successful stints in the IPL first with Mumbai Indians & later with Rajasthan Royals. He had served as bowling mentor of Mumbai Indians in 2018 & most recently in the IPL 2022, he served as Rajasthan Royals fast bowling coach. Under Malinga’s guidance, Sanju Samson-led RR reached the final of the IPL for the first time since winning the Trophy in 2008. However, couldn’t repeat history as they succumbed to a seven wickets loss at the hands of Gujarat Titans. RR’s bowling attack was one of the most lethal among the franchisees & due to their on-point show with the ball they were able to make it to the summit clash of the IPL 2022.
Through the course of the season, several Royals players, including the likes of Trent Boult, praised Malinga for his ability to simplify the art of T20 bowling. Sri Lanka will host Australia for three T20Is, five ODIs & three Tests commencing from June 7. The tour was under doubt due to ongoing political unrest in the island, however, both CA & SLC were confident that teh tour would go ahead as planned. Sri Lanka also named an 18-member squad for the T20Is series which saw young Pathirana receiving his maiden call-up on the back of his impressive stint with Chennai Super Kings, in the IPL 2022. Pathirana is also called ‘baby Malinga’ as his unorthodox bowling action resembles with Malinga’s bowling action.
