AUS vs SL 2022: Starc to miss the third T20I due to a finger Injury

AUS vs SL 2022: Australia pacer Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the third T20I against Sri Lanka & is doubtful for the initial games of the five-match ODI series after sustaining an injury on his left index finger. During the first T20I of the series, Starc suffered a cut on his left index finger which required him to undergo six stitches thereby ruling him out of the remaining matches of the T20I series.

Jhye Richardson who replaced Starc in Australia’s second T20I scalped three crucial wickets for 26 runs guiding Australia to a gleaming win & helping them to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Jhye Richardson has been named into Australia’s ODI squad as a cover for Starc.

Starc sustained a cut on his index finger on his bowling hands in the opening over of the first T20I on Tuesday. After sustaining an injury he managed to bowl his remaining three-over spell & picked up 3 for 26 runs. But looking at the nature of his injury, Starc was ruled out of the second & third T20I. He will remain with the squad and will continue to train but he will need a minimum of seven days, and possibly longer, for the wound to heal. This means he would likely be unavailable for the first ODI in Pallekele next Tuesday. Australia won’t atke any risk with Starc’s injury as he is an integral part of their Test line-up. He will continue to play a vital role in their Tets series against Sri Lanka later this month.

Meanwhile, this will be a good opportunity for Richardson to prove his mettle in the ODI format as well after being initially left out of the ODI squad despite being a part of the T20I squad. He was set to play in the two Australia A four-day games in Hambantota that run concurrently with the ODI series in Sri Lanka. But now after being named as Starc’s cover in the ODI squad, South Australia quick Nathan McAndrew has been called in from Warwickshire as Richardson’s replacement for Australia A.

The AUS vs SL 2022, ODI series will be played from June 14 to June 24 at Pallakele & Colombo. After the conclusion of the ODI series, the Aussies will take on the hosts in a two-match Test series. The first Test will be played from June 29 to July 3 & the second Test will be played from July 8 to 12. Both the Test matches will be played on Galle.
