AUS vs SL 2nd T20I: The ‘Men in Yellow’ have again proved their mettle by defeating Sri Lanka in the second T20I on Wednesday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. With this win, Australia sealed the series by a 2-0 score. The match unfolded with Sri Lanka batting first & putting up a disappointing show with the bat. Nissanka & Gunathilaka who made note-worthy contributions in the first T20i too got dismissed early.
Hosts again failed to show up with the bat
Charith Asalanka & Kusal Mendis steadied Sri Lanka’s submerging innings by stitching a 66-run stand for the third wicket. Charith Asalnka chipped in with crucial 39 runs off 33 balls while Mendis too contributed by scoring 36 off 36 balls. But soon their flourishing hopes were put to rest when Asalanka got dismissed after scoring 39 runs. Wickets kept falling for Sri Lanka at regular intervals & none of the batsmen could actually stay back & accelerate their innings. The likes of Rajapaksa (13 off 11), Shanaka (14 off 17), and Hasaranga (12 off 8) all got out cheaply. As a result, Sri Lanka only managed to score 124 runs in the first innings.
For Australia, Kane Richardson starred with the ball scalping 4 for 30. Jhye Richardson (3 for 26) also returned with impressive figures. Though Sri Lanka produced a disheartening show with the bat they fought well to defend their meager total.
Hasaranga’s 4-33 couldn’t help Lankans to Save the Series
Chasing 125 runs target, Australians had a tough time in front of Hasaranga’s fiery bowling attack. Soon in the 3rd over, Hasarnga got the prized scalp of Aaron Finch who walked back to the pavilion after scoring 24 off 13 balls. The Sri Lankan spinner scalped another prized wicket of Marsh (11 off 7) while Steve Smith (5 of 4) once again got dismissed early without creating an impression with the bat. By the end of the first six overs, Australia had lost 3 wickets and David Warner, unfortunately, got run out in the 7th over.
Sri Lankan bowlers were on the mission of dismantling Australia’s batting order & were successful in doing that. In the 9th over, Marcus Stoinis (9 off 7) got out off Chameera, while Hasaranga picked his 3rd wicket in the form of Maxwell (19 off 19) in the 12th over and Ashton Agar on the very next ball to leave the game poised at 99 for 6.
AUS vs SL 2nd T20I: However, Wanindu Hasaranga finished his spell of four overs & experienced Matthew Wade (26*) then joined hands with Jhye Richardson (9*) to take Australia home with three wickets & 13 balls in hand. Hasaranga’s powering spell of 4-33 goes in vain as Sri Lanka lost the series by 2-0 scores. The third & final T20I of the series will be played on Saturday, 11th June 2022.
