AUS vs SL 2nd Test: Karunaratne-Mendis 152-run stand powers Sri Lanka to 184-2 at Stumps

AUS vs SL 2nd Test: Frontline batsman and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne along with ace batsman Kusal Mendis powered Sri Lanka to a solid start and laid the foundation by scoring their respective fifties. The duo pioneered Sri Lanka to 184-2 at the Stumps on Day 2.

While Karunaratne was dismissed on 86 off Mitchell Swepson, Kusal Mendis remained not out on 84. Mendis will kickstart the proceedings of Day 3 along with Sri Lanka’s most experienced and versatile all-rounder Angelo Mathews who is batting on 6.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Australia scored an impressive total of 364 runs. The touring party rode on to a stunning performance by Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith to put up a mammoth total on board.

Marnus Labuschagne scored a brilliant knock of 104 runs before getting dismissed to debutant Prabath Jayasuriya. The highlight of Australia’s innings was Steve Smith who remained not out on 145. Usman Khwaja also played a helpful knock of 37 runs in the start.

For Sri Lanka, debutant Prabath Jayasuriya was the deciding factor as he made his dream debut by recording a figure of 6/118. Kasun Ranjitha picked up a couple of wickets whereas Ramesh Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana got a wicket apiece.

Combating Australia’s challenging total, Sri Lanka lost an early wicket as Patthum Nissanka was dismissed by Mitchell Starc on a mere score of 6 runs. However, the woes of Nissanka were fabulously tackled by the partnership of Karunaratne and Mendis.
