SL vs AUS, 2nd Test: Spectacular tons from Marnus Labuschagne & Steve Smith put Australia in a dominating position on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Friday. Opting to bat first, Visitors got off to a poor start with Kasun Rajitha when he knocked out David warner’s off-stump in the fifth over of the day. Joining hands with Ramesh Mendis & Debutant Prabath Jayasuriya, Rajitha managed to keep Australians in control by bowling on perfect lengths & lines.
Kusal Mendis then dismissed Usman Khawaja in the 22nd over to help Sri Lanka have an edge over the hosts. However, Australians are not the ones who give up easily, they bounced back with Marnus labuschagne leading the charge & bringing up his scintillating fifty. He further embellished his fifty by racing towards triple figures. Soon Labushcagne brought up his fourth Test Ton & his first outside Australia by hitting a single at mid-wicket. The second session was completely dominated by the visitors & Steve Smith proved to be the perfect partner for Labuschagne.
Niroshan Dickwella who earlier had missed the stumping chance to dismiss Labuschagne made amends when he whipped off the bails of Labuschagne to hand over Prabath Jayasuriya his maiden Test wicket. Labuschgane departed after scoring 104 runs off 156 balls with Australia marching to tea at 204-3. However, Labuschagne’s wicket didn’t affect Smith’s intent on the other end who ensured Australia didn’t lose the momentum of the game
SL vs AUS, 2nd Test: Smith brought up his 28th Test Ton, the first after 2021
Steve Smith found his lost form in the second Test against Sri Lanka. Wickets kept falling at the other end but Smith was heading strong with the bat on one end. Soon he brought up his 28th Test ton by hitting a powerful cover drive shot in the final hour of the first day. The century was special for Smith as it was the first since January 2021.
Travis Head (12 off 36) and Cameron Green (4 off 14) failed to show perseverance & deliver with the bat. However, Steve Smith & Alex Carey stayed unbetaten at the crease till the end of Day One’s play. The duo ensured that there was no further loss of wickets & guided Australia to 298-5 at stumps on day One. Smith stayed unbetaten on 109 off 212 balls a knock laced with 14 fours while Alex Carey is unbeaten at 16 off 35 balls.
For Sri Lanka, except Prabath Jayasuriya none of the bowlers looked effective with the ball. Jayasuriya returned with figures of 3 for 90 while the likes of Kasun Rajitha and Ramesh Mendis picked one wicket each. Australia still has six wickets in hand & would aim at extending their lead beyond 300 run mark without any loss of wickets on Day two.
