AUS vs SL 2nd Test: A clinical show by Jayasuriya, Chandimal powers Sri Lanka to a series leveling defeat against Australia

AUS vs SL 2nd Test: Dinesh Chandimal’s double ton & Prabath Jayasuriya’s six-wicket haul helped Sri Lanka to beat Australia by an innings & 39 runs in Galle & level the series at 1-1.

Sri Lanka resumed day four with a lead of 67 & their star batters Dinesh Chandimal & Ramesh Mendis were tackling the Australians’ bowling attack with great determination. Chandimal was at his best form while Mendia too was contributing by chipping in valuable runs to extend their lead. They shared a stand of 68 before Micthell Starc removed Mendis for LBW followed by Maheesh Theekshana. However, that didn’t affect the Lankans much as their lead was already grown to 135 at lunch.

Chandimal was going ahead with his aggressor approach hitting the Australians acorss the ground & reaching close to a double-ton mark. Soon he reached the landmark by smashing Starc for back-to-back maximums. The home crowd erupted with joy & the dressing room was filled with cheers as Chandimal became the first Sri Lankan to score a double ton against Australia in Test Cricket. Australia’s helplessness ended when Mitchell Swepson trapped Kasun Rajitha but till that time hosts had already taken their lead to 190.

In the secodn innings as well, Australians struggled against the spin attack of debutant Prabath Jayasuriya. He was well-supported by the rest of the spinners with Ramesh Mendis & Maheesh Theekshana chipping in with two wickets each. But Jayasuriya was the star among them who walked away with the figures of 6-59. His wickets included Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc & Mitchell Swepson as the Australians looked clueless against his terrific bowling show.

Australians’ struggle against the spin attack was real as they weren’t able to face the turning ball. Only Marnus could cross the 30-run mark while the rest of them failed to hit the straps. As a result, Sri Lanka registered a scintillating an innings & 39 runs win over Australia & leveled the series by a 1-1 score.
