AUS vs SL 2nd Test: Theekshana & Wellalage receives a call-up to the Test squad

AUS vs SL 2nd Test: Sri Lanka Cricket have called up spinners Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage & Lasith Manasinghe to the Test squad for the second Test against Australia in Galle. All three uncapped players at the Test level & one of them might feature in the Playing XI for the second Test after Lasith Embuldeniya was dropped out from the squad & fellow left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama was ruled out with Covid-19.

Prolific 19-year-old left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage was the leading wicket-taker in the three-match ODI series by scalping nine wickets at 22.33. He comes handy with the bat as well & could add depth to Sri Lanka’s line-up if he debuts in the second Test. Initially, he was among the traveling reserves for the first Test but now he has been elevated to the main group. In 11 first-class matches, Wellalage has scalped 34 wickets at 30.76.

On the other hand, right-arm finger spinner Maheesh Theekshana could scalp just four wickets in five ODIs, he caused Australia problems during the white-ball leg of the tour. However, Theekshana has played just three first-class matches, the last of which came in 2018 & has been viewed as a limited-overs specialist.

Off-spinner Manasinghe, one of the rising star of Sri Lanka Cricket played four-day series against Australia A last month where he collected 13 wickets across the two matches in Hambantota. His outstanding stint has resulted in his maiden call-up to the Test squad.

Meanwhile, Embuldeniya has been omitted from the second Test on the back of his poor performance in the opening match of the Series where he conceded 73 runs off 15 wicketless overs. He was also omitted from Sri Lanka’s recent tour of Bangladesh tour when he struggled to deliver in the first Test.

“He’s finding it tough at the moment,” head coach Chris Silverwood said after the first Test in Galle. “He’s getting a lot of support in the dressing room because he’s a great lad. We’ve got to work on him holding a consistent length.

Ramesh Mendis who sclaped four wickets conceding 112 runs during the first Test retains his position in the second Test while Angelo Matthews who had tested positive for COVID-19 on the third day of the first Test has completed his isolation & would be available for selection for the Second Test.
