The match unfolded with Australia winning the toss & electing to bat first. Pacer Jayden Seales draw the first blood by dismissing dangerous David Warner for just five runs leaving Australia for runs at 9-1. Then came Khawaja & labuschagne for Australia’s rescue as the duo stabilized Australia’s innings. They mixed caution with aggression & helped Australia to cross the 150-run mark.
Their powering 142-run stand was broken when the all-rounder Kyle Mayers struck to dismiss Khawaja for 65 off 149 balls in an innings embellished with five fours & a six. This was Khawaja’s 18th fifth in Test format & fourth half-century of 2022.
Steven Smith then marched on the crease & along with labuschagne made a mockery of the West Indies bowling attack. They smashed Windies across the park & accelerated runs for their team. Labuschagne brought up his ton in just 192 balls while Smith amassed 50 off 75 balls to keep Australia’s scoreboard ticking. The duo amassed an unbeaten 142-run stand to conclude Day 1 at 239-2.
The duo will resume Day 2 with the same amount of enthusiasm & would aim to continue their gleaming stand adding more runs to Australia’s scoreboard. For West Indies Mayers 1-24, and Seales 1-63 scalped one wicket each.
