Australia to rotate Captaincy in ODIs, stand-in Captains will come in picture

Australia is looking forward to managing Pat Cummins’s workload by practicing rotating captaincy in ODIs for the next 12 months. This means differnet players will stand in for Pat Cummins whenever the Captain will be rested. Josh Hazlewood who had never captained in an International fixture but has served as a vice-cpatain took the role for their secodn ODI against England in Sydney when Cummins was rested.

“I’m standing in [for] this game, and hopefully it is a nice and seamless transition,” Hazlewood said at the toss. “Pat was happy to have a rest with the amount of cricket coming up. Just a nice little ‘you’ll captain next game’. It’s a wider leadership group, so just standing in for this game.”

However, it is not a compulsion that Hazlewood will always serve as a captain in Cummins’s absence. With ODI World Cup 2023 in the picture Cricket Australia will provide other players an opportunity to stand in as ODI Captain in the series when Cummins will be rested as the board wants to keep him fresh for the ODI challenge next year in India.

Cricket Australia choosing Hazlewood as stand-in captain meant that he has surpassed other players who have led Australia recently in the absence of a regular Captain. Alex Carey stood in the absence of injured Aaron Finch on the tour of West Indies while Steven Smith stood in place of Cummins during the last Ashes when he was ruled out of the Adelaide Test after being deemed as a close COVID-19 contact.

“I don’t expect Pat to play every one-day game in the lead-up to the World Cup,” selection chair George Bailey had said when Cummins was announced ODI captain. “We’ve got a number of players within the group who can assume the leadership should they need to. So I expect we might see two or three guys taking the leadership at some stage. We are moving away from this concept of a captain taking over and their leadership being all-encompassing. It’s very much a collaboration at times.”

David Warner could be an option for stand-in captaincy in Odis only if his leadership ban would be overturned, a decision on it would be expected in near future. Travis Head, who captains South Australia & Adelaide Strikers could be another candidate for the post of ODI captaincy. On the other hand, Finch said that he won’t make a decision on his career until BBL but he is expected to continue the post till T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in West Indies & USA.
