BBL 2022-23: Melbourne Renegades signs Andre Russell in a short-term Deal

Melbourne Renegades has signed Andre Russell for the BBL 2022-23 in a short-term deal as a replacement for their star player Liam Livingstone. Initially overlooked in the overseas draft, Russell got an opportunity to feature in the upcoming edition of the league for the initial four matches.

England’s star batter & Renegades Platinum signing Liam Livingstone will be unavailable in the initial stage of the BBL 2022-23 after being included in England’s Test squad for their Pakistan tour in December. This opens the door for Andre Russell to play in the first four matches for Melbourne Renegades in the BBL 2022-23. He had previously featured in seven matches for Renegades in 2014-2015 which was his first stint in the BBL.

“I can’t wait to be part of the Big Bash League again this summer,” Russell said. “I’m excited to be back in red, and will be doing everything I can to help the Melbourne Renegades start the tournament with a bang,” Russell added to his statement.

Coming to Livingstone, he was Renegades No.1 choice in the platinum category in BBL’s inaugural overseas draft held in August 2022. However, it was clear that he will not feature in the entire tournament after signing a deal with the MI Cape Town franchise for CSA’s inaugural SA20 league to be held in January 2023.

Andre Russell was ignored in BBL 2022 Inaugural Overseas Draft

Russell who entered the BBL 2022 overseas player’s draft as one of the standout player having previous stints with Renegades, Sydney Thunder & Melbourne Stars was not picked by any of the franchises due to his limited availability. In BBL 2021 he could feature in just five matches for Melbourne Stars due to his commitments with other leagues.

James Rosengarten, Renegades General Manager said that Russell was a part of their initial drafts & they are delighted to include him in the set-up as a replacement player.

“We are thrilled to have Andre Russell returning to the Renegades this summer. Andre is one of the best T20 players in the world; he’s a proven match-winner and exactly the type of player we need,” Rosengarten said in his statement.
