BBL 2022-23: Usman Qadir signs a deal with Sydney Thunder

In an attempt to strengthen the bowling attack BBL’s Sydney Thunder franchise has signed Pakistan’s Legspinner Usman Qadir for the BBL 2022-23. He will serve as the cover player for Tanveer Sangha who is yet to be cleared to play in this edition of BBL due to a back stress fracture.

Notably, Qadir is their fourth overseas player on Thunder’s list along with Fazalhaq Farooqi, Rilee Rossouw & Alex Hale. However, with the team allowed to feature only three overseas players in Playing XI, it’s worth seeing who will make the cut into the squad. Earlier this month the franchise signed Afghanistan’s star pacer Farooqi after their platinum signing of BBL’s overseas draft, David Willey withdrew from the contract.

An Overview of Usman Qadir Stint in T20Is & T20 Leagues

Qadir who has played in 23 T20Is for the national side has previous BBL experience having played for Perth Scorchers. Three years back he had also declared his ambition to play for Australia before pursuing his International Career with Pakistan. His record for Scorchers was not so impressive as he could scalp just six wickets in seven fixtures at a poor economy rate of 8.45. Qadir was also a reserve player for Pakistan in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia.

Talking about the signing of Usman Qadir the head of the Sydney Thunder franchise Andrew Gilchrist said, “Usman joins us with plenty of experience, having represented Pakistan, and playing in T20 leagues around the world.”

He further said that Qadir carries good experience of playing in Australian Conditions having played for Western Australia & South Australia’s Futures League so he could add more power to the Thunder’s squad. Sydney Thunder will begin their BBL 2022-23 Campaign on the opening day of the tournament against Melbourne Stars in Canberra.
