BCCI on Monday announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa. And there comes a huge boost for India’s young prolific player Shafali Verma as she has been named as India’s captain for the inaugural edition of the ICC U-19 Women’s World Cup 2023. While Incumbent Captain Shweta Sehrawat will serve as the deputy of Verma.

The BCCI has inculcated a dynamic approach towards the selection of the squad with a diversified all-round base and specialized batting-bowling talent. Apart from Shefali Verma, wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh will be on the national team. The veteran player will aim to contribute her efforts to lift the title.

Veteran U19 batters Shweta Sehrawat, Soumya Tiwari, Trisha Gongadi, and Soniya Mendhiya constitute an integral part of the squad. Trisha and Soumya have been the leading run scorers for India in the ongoing series against New Zealand whereas Shweta and Soniya displayed an exceptional performance at the recently concluded Women’s U-19 Challengers Trophy.

Indian Women’s U19 bowling attack also seems to be fascinating with Titas Sadhu and Hurley Gaga leading the attack with the stunning backup support of Falak Naz and Shabnam ND. Sonam Yadav, Archana Devi, Parshavi Chopra, and Mannat Kashyap will take care of spin duties.

Hrishita Basu will serve as the backup for wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh whereas Shikha Shallot, Yashasri, and Najla CMC have been named as the reserves.

India will kickstart their U19 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign against the hosts, South Africa, on January 14, 2023, at Benoni. India is placed in Group D alongside UAE, Scotland, and South Africa. The top three teams from each pool will advance to the super six round which will serve as an elimination round through which the semifinals will be ascertained. As a preparation for the World Cup, Indian Women will play a five-match T-20I series against South Africa from December 27 to January 4.
