BCCI sacks Senior Men’s Selection Committee & invites Fresh Applications

In a shocking move the BCCI has sacked the entire senior Men’s selection Committee led by former India Fast Bowler Chetan Sharma. On Friday evening the board sent out a media release stating that they were inviting fresh applicants for the positions of five national selectors. The board has fixed a deadline of November 28 for receiving fresh applications.

As per the reports, four current selectors- Sunil Joshi, Harvinder Singh, Debasis Mohanty & Sharma who are currently watching the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy matches at various venues around India havent received any communication from BCCI on the development. However, in the media statement release by the BCCI there was no mention of sleection committee being dropped by the board. The BCCI took the major step as a part of early review of India’s performances at the T20 World Cups where the Men in Blue made early exits in group stage in 2021 & later were eliminated right in the semifinals in 2022.

Since 2021, Chetan Sharma led selection committee was reduced to four members after Abey Kuruvilla, the former Mumbai & India fast bowler completed their maximum tenure of five years. While Kuruvilla moved on to the role of BCCI general manager, the board didn’t appoint his replacement on the selection panel.

The decisions of India’s Selection Committee started raising eyebrows when the selectors announced India squads for not only the limited overs series in New Zealand but also for the upcoming Bangladesh tour in December. Their decision became a talking point as its an unusual move for selectors to announce squads for two separate tours at one & the same time. Though Mohanty is on the verge of finishing his tenure as a junior selector, the remaining three selectors have served just half duration of their four year tenures.

Meanwhile the candidates who are willing to apply for the post of selectors should fulfill these three criterias:

  • They should have played a minimum of seven Test matches Or
  • 30 first class matches or
  • Atleast 10 ODI & 20 First Class matches to apply for the post opf selectors.
