IND vs NZ: Team India’s humiliating exit from T20 World Cup 2022 after suffering a humiliating 10 wickets loss against England in the Semifinals has disappointed their fans & BCCI to a great extent. The loss has highlighted loopholes in India’s line-up & has forced the National Team Selectors & BCCI to make some tough calls including Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy keeping in view of the T20 World Cup 2024.
BCCI is not happy with the team’s performance & might consider making a couple of changes in the team’s leadership panel. BCCI is planning to replace Rohit Sharma as T20I Captain & handing the reins of the T20I team to Hardik Pandya.
“Of course, some tough calls have to be made. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. We had preparations and sent the team early. Yes, two crucial injuries did derail our plans a bit. But that’s the nature of the game. If you see, England is also without Jofra Archer or Mark Wood. But they didn’t struggle today. As for captaincy, it is a matter of discussion. We will sit after the NZ series,” a senior BCCI official said.
Why Rohit Sharma would step down from T20I Captaincy?
There are a lot of factors that are in favor of Rohit Sharma stepping down from Captaincy in the T20I format. The primary reason is his age. Currently, he is 35 years age & by T20 World Cup 2024 he will be 37. Secondly with ODI World Cup 2023 just a few months away Rohit Sharma will shift his focus over the marquee event opening the doors for another candidate to step in for T20I Captaincy.
Rohit would focus more on ODI & Test format for the next two years missing several T20I series. And with T20 World Cup 2024 in the picture a strong player who could perform well & handle the team effectively is the need of the hour. All these factors will propel the management to think of splitting captaincy & bring in a candidate who can deliver results & fulfill India’s dream of winning a T20 World Cup.
Looking at the current scenario & players’ form, Hardik Pandya is a strong candidate to take over Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy in t20I format. If he does well in the New Zealand series as a Captain in the absence of Rohit, Virat & KL Rahul then there are chances that BCCI will allot him T20I Captaincy in the near future. Managing the workload & keeping in mind the fitness & injuries of players, BCCI would aim to bring a strong player who could share a load of Captaincy with Rohit Sharma so that the latter could focus more on the ODI & Test format.
India will tour New Zealand for three-match T20I & ODI Series to be played from November 18 to November 30. Key players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli & KL Rahul will be rested for the New Zealand series. Hardik would lead the T20I setup against Williamson’s full-fledged team while Shikhar Dhawan would take charge of India’s ODI team.
