India’s swash-buckling all-rounder Washington Sundar is all set to play for Lancashire club in county cricket in the ongoing county championship 2022 subject to fitness & visa clearance. Washington could be available for three county championship games from July & would also feature in the entire Royal London Cup from the month of July. He would become th second Indian to feature in English County Cricket this season after Cheteshwar Pujara.
Who can forget the heroics of Pujara who turned the heads around by amassing 720 runs in eight innings at an average of 120 for Sussex in division two of County Cricket. Earlier in 2021, Shreyas Iyer was signed as an overseas player by the Lancashire club for the Royal London Club but had to pull out because of a shoulder injury.
Washington is currently rehabilitating from a hand injury at the NCA in Bengaluru. The county games in England will be Washington’s first assignment since he sustained a finger injury while playing a three-day tour game against a County Select XI in Chester-le-Street in July 2021. The injury had sidelined him from that England tour and the second leg of IPL 2021.
Washington’s cricketing career took a backseat because of injury & illness since last year. He was going to make a comeback with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy by featuring in his Tamil Nadu team. However, the Indian team management had warned Tamil Nadu against rushing him back into action. As a result, he was sidelined from their plans for the 2021 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali’s trophy.
However, he returned back to action in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 201 where he scalped 16 wickets in eight matches at an economy rate of 4.77 in Tamil Nadu’s run to the finals. On the back of his stellar show, he was selected for India’s three-match ODI series in South Africa. But here also luck didn’t support him as he had to miss that tour due to positive COVID-19 results.
Washington then paved a comeback with the home ODI series against West Indies however could get going for long as he again sustained a hamstring injury ahead of the T20i leg of the series. He tried to beat the spate of injuries & made a comeback in the IPL 2022 but there too he hurt his webbing twice and played just nine games for Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring 101 runs and claiming six wickets. Washington’s Lancashire stint with the clash with the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), which kicks off on June 23 in Tirunelveli. Washington is with Salem Spartans in the TNPL, but he didn’t participate in the side’s preparatory camp in Chennai.
Lancashire games would be an opportunity for Washington to prove his fitness & form & make a place in India’s squad for their crucial series lined up in the future.
