England’s newly appointed Captain Ben Stokes has proved his prowess in County Cricket. The swashbuckling all-rounder made new records in County Cricket by smashing the highest number of sixes in an Innings on Friday.
In his blistering 161 runs knock-off 88 balls, Ben Stokes smashed 17 sixes in an innings surpassing Gloucestershire’s Andrew Symonds record who smashed 16 sixes back in 1995 against Glamorgan. Other than Symonds, Essex’s Graham Napier smashed 16 sixes in an innings against Surrey in his county innings in 2011.
Ben Stokes accomplished the remarkable feat during Durham’s fixture against Worcestershire in their second division of County Championship 2022 at the New Road stadium on Friday. Ben Stokes smashed 34 runs off Josh Baker’s over when he was batting at 70 runs in 59 balls. After smashing five sixes and a four in a single over, Stokes ended up with 100 runs off 64 balls.
Ben Stokes went on to score 161 runs off 88 balls in an innings studded with eight fours and seventeen sixes. Stokes’s comprehensive knock enabled Durham to post a competitive total of 580/6 and declared their innings.
This was Stokes first appearance after being appointed as England’s New Test Captain following Joe Root’s resignation from the role last month.
Joe Root faced immense criticism due to England’s Test team’s poor performances in the recently concluded Ashes series 2022 & their test tour against West Indies. They suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat in the Ashes 2021-2022 followed by a poor 1-0 defeat in the West Indies Test series. Rising criticisms & burden of failures had compelled Stokes to step down from his post of captaincy.
Ben Stokes who made his Test debut in December 2013, has played 79 red-ball games for England amassing 5061 Test runs at an average of 35.89, and claimed 174 wickets with the ball. He was named vice-captain in February 2017 and also stood in as captain in a Test fixture against West Indies in 2020 when Root was on paternity leave.
His appointment came on the recommendation of Rob key the New Managing Director of Men’s Cricket & was approved by the ECB Interim Chair and Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison. After taking up the reins of Captaincy, Stokes only aim would be to help England get back to winning terms & improve their position in the WTC Table where they are lagging at the bottom place with only one win from 13 matches.
