Shafali Verma’s 34 runs out of 46 balls followed by exemplary performance of bowlers helped India to grab the desirable spot in Semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. The outstanding performance of India Women in the ICC Women’s World Cup in Melbourne on Thursday will be written in golden words in cricket history! New-Zealand after winning the toss choose to ball first & landed up India to fetch 133/8 against New Zealand. Shafali managed to get a decent score of 46 runs out of 34 balls followed by Taniya Bhatia fetching 23 runs out of 25 balls. However, India with its tough restricted bowling led New-Zealand to fetch just 130 runs out of 6 wickets & registered India’s third successive win in the tournament. Win this outstanding win India topped Group A after beating Australia and Bangladesh in their last two matches.
Defending is average total India introduced her straight spinner, Deepti Sharma, in front of New-Zealand’s opener batswomen Rachel Priest who hit 2 boundaries and made 12 runs on Deepti’s bowling. But well-experienced pacer Shiksha Pandey knocked Priest in the next over when she caught her in mid-wicket.
With Shikha and left-arm spinner, Rajeshwari Gayakwad bowling in tandem, New Zealand played with caution to reach 28/1. Back into the attack, Deepti then cleaned up Bates with a beauty of delivery as New Zealand slipped to 30/2.
Poonam Yadav and Radha Yadav then mounted the pressure on the Kiwis and soon the Black Caps were 34/3 when the former dismissed skipper Sophie Devine (14).
Maddy Green (24) and Katey Martin (25) then tried to resurrect the innings with a 36-ball 43-run stand.
Radha then dismissed Martin to leave New Zealand at 90 for 5 in 16.3 overs.
Needing 44 off 21 balls, Kerr (34) blasted four boundaries to accumulate 18 runs in the second last over bowled by Poonam to bring the equation down to 16 off six balls.
In the final over, Hayley Jensen (11) and Kerr cracked a four each but Shikha with her experienced bowling held her nerves in the end to complete the win.
Shafali and Taniya kept the scoreboard alive by adding 51 runs for the second wicket.
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s poor form also continued as she was soon back to the hut after being caught and bowled by Leigh Kasperek.
Shafali had four hits to the fence and three maximum shots in her innings. Left-handed batter Deepti Sharma with 8 runs and Veda Krishnamurthy with 6 runs brought up the 100 in the 15th over but both departed soon as India reached 104/6.
Radha Yadav then blasted 14 runs off nine balls, which included a six in the final over, to give some respectability to an average total.
