Cricket Scotland to Introduce Paid Contracts for National Women’s team

Cricket Scotland has made a remarkable decision by announcing paid contracts for its International Women’s Team for the first time in the history of cricket. Scotland women’s team currently occupies the 14th spot in the ICC t20I Rankings & missed out on qualification for the Women’s T20 World Cup in February. However, in order to promote the growth of Women’s Cricket in the country, Scotland has decided to provide paid contracts to players in the National Women’s team.

“This builds on the move to pay equal match fees to the men’s and women’s players introduced in 2021 and will enable a number of players to devote more time to training and practice and is a start to putting the women’s game onto a fully professional footing,” Cricket Scotland said in a statement.

Scotland Cricket Board was under crisis earlier this year after a report of Institutional racism within the sport got published in the media. The board revealed a number of measures on Thursday that they will undertake for the long-term success of International teams & develop a sustainable governing body in coming years.

Cricket Scotland has also decided to recruit a new head of communications, an EDI (equality, diversity, and inclusion) manager, and conduct in sport manager, & will probably not renew the contracts of seven staff within the strength & conditioning, physiotherapy and support services provision.

These changes will be undertaken to refocus Cricket Scotland’s priorities & to establish a strong financial base which will help to launch an ambitious new strategy for cricket in the coming months. Meanwhile, Cricket Scotland’s Interim Chief Executive will stay in power until November 2023 on a fixed term to ensure proper implementation & continuation during this tenure of substantial restructuring.

Anjan Luthra, who was appointed as chair last month, said: “This a watershed moment for the sport of cricket in Scotland. The investment announced today into the women’s game is an important building block in our desire to make cricket in Scotland a fully inclusive sport where there is no place for racism, discrimination, or inequalities.

She further said that they aim to create a bold new version of Scottish Cricket & they will do so by resulting in positive change at every level within the sport.
