Ashes 1st Test Day 3: Joe Root, Malan revives England’s innings after suffering early jolts

Ashes 1st Test, Day 3: Joe Root & Dawid Malan revived England’s innings by staying unbeaten on the crease by the end of Day 3 of the ongoing first Test at the Gabba, Brisbane on Friday.

At the Stumps England’s score read 220/2 & is currently trailing by 58 runs. Dawid Malan & Joe Root are currently unbeaten on 86 (158) & 80 (177) runs respectively. Resuming the third session at 107/2 & trailing by 171 runs the innings acted as a comeback stint for three lions as they kept the scoreboard ticking. The duo came to bat during the second session & remained unbeaten since.

Earlier Rory Burns & Haseeb Hameed provided England with a stable beginning but they faced a major jolt as Australia’s Cpatain Pat Cummins removed Rory Burns for 13 in the 9th over of the innings. After Burns’s dismissal, Malan joined hands with Hameed in the middle & the duo put on 38 runs for the second wicket.

However, as soon as both the batters got settled on the crease, Mitchell Starc caught Hameed (27) & England was left reeling at 61/2 in the 21st over, still trailing by 217 runs. For England, Mark Wood and Robinson both ended with 3 wickets each, while Woakes picked two. Jack Lean gave 102 runs in 13 overs for a wicket.

In the morning, Australia managed to score 82 runs to reach a total of 425. Travis’s head’s 153 off 148 balls accompanied by Mitchell Starc’s 35 helped the Aussies to take a comprehensive lead of 278 runs.

Root & Malan will resume their innings in the opening session of Day 4 of the first test. The first hour of tomorrow will be extremely crucial for both sides. It will be interesting to see how things turn out on Saturday.
