Cricket Australia to closely monitor Sri Lanka Situation but Confident over Tour

AUS vs SL 2022: Cricket Australia is monitoring rapidly growing civic unrest in Sri Lanka but remains confident that Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka will go ahead as planned.

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on Monday night following months of protests nationwide after Sri Lanka got plunged into its worst economic crisis in decades. His resignation came after government supporters attack protestors leaidng to a nationwide curfew & armed troops being deployed in Colombo.

Australian Men’s team are slated to arrive in Colombo in three weeks for their tour which comprises three Twenty20s, five ODIs, and two Tests between June 7 and July 12. the matter of concern is that Australia Men will spend 16 of those days in Colombo, where the current violence has unfolded.

Cricket Australia’s Head of security Stuart Bailey completed a reconnaissance tour of the country last month in the midst of the economic crisis, and it was cleared as safe to visit. However, after Monday night’s violence, CA Officials will now monitor Sri Lanka’s situation more closely. But that doesn’t rule out the commencement of the tour as CA are still confident that the tour will proceed.

There is also a thought that Australia touring Sri Lanka, where there have been significant food shortages and power cuts, could assist economically.

The AUS vs SL 2022 tour will mark the beginning of the Australian team’s busy 18 months schedule. It has been confirmed that Australia will travel to India for three-match T20I series before the home World Cup, as well as host West Indies in a series in Australia.

After the completion of the home series, Australia will travel to India for Test matches & an away Ashes series in 2023, followed by an ODI World Cup in India later in 2023. A make-up tour of South Africa also lies between the Ashes and ODI World Cup, after the three-Test series was postponed last year due to Covid-19.
