England captain Joe Root’s third gleaming century of the ongoing test series helped the hosts to dominate India on Day 2 of the ongoing ENG vs IND 3rd Test 2021, at Headingley, Leeds on Thursday.
At stumps, England’s score reads as 423/8 a lead of 345 runs with two wickets in hand. For hosts, Craig Overton 24* & Ollie Robinson 0* are at the crease on stumps. Resuming the final session at 298/3, Jonny Bairstow started scoring runs at a steady pace & Joe Root carried on with his stunning momentum. In the 104th over of the innings, Joe Root scored his 23rd century in tets cricket & the hosts were in absolute control. Bairstow’s short cameo of 29 runs came to an end in the 108th over as Mohammed Shami sent Bairstow back to the pavilion reducing England to 350/4.
Then came Jos Buttler (7) who failed to leave a mark with the bat as he was removed by Shami & this brought Moeen Ali to the crease. Jasprit Bumrah finally caught Joe Root in the 118th over but it was already late as the captain has scored 121 runs. On the other hand, Moeen Ali (8) couldn’t create a difference with the bat as he got dismissed for 8 runs after handing a simple catch to substitute fielder Axar Patel at Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling thereby reducing England to 383/7. Sam Curran also departed after playing a knock of 15 however in the end Craig Overton & Ollie Robinson ensured that England doesn’t lose more wickets before the end of the day.
Earlier in the second session on day 2, England exerted pressure on India by scoring piles of runs. Resuming at 182/2, Root & Malan scored runs at a brisk pace. Joe Root made the best use of his stunning form as he brought up his half-century off 57 balls in the 82nd over of the innings. Dawid Malan also scored his half-century in the 86th over & England completely overshadowed visitors on Day 2. Malan & Root helped England to surpass 200 runs mark & the hosts were in full control of the game. However, on the final ball of the second session, Malan (70) got strangled down the leg side & lost his wicket to Mohammed Siraj.
Earlier, a spectacular bowling attack from James Anderson & other pacers of England helped England to have an edge over India on day one of the ENG vs IND 3rd Test 2021. Resuming the innings at 120/0 Burns & Hameed scored 15 more runs to the total before Mohammed Shami removed Burns at 61 bringing Dawid Malan to the crease. Malan & Hameed together scored 24 runs for the second wicket but their stand came to an end on the final ball of the 63rd over as Jadeja bowled Hameed at 68 reducing England to 159/2. Joe Root along with Malan ensure that England didn’t suffer more hiccups & England entered the final session of Day 1.
On the first day of the third test, India was bowled for 78 as no batsman could create a mark on the field. For England, James Anderson & Craig Overton scalped three wickets each.
