ENG vs IND 5th Test: India fined two WTC Points for maintaining slow over rate

ENG vs IND 5th Test: India has been fined two points & 40% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the fifth rescheduled Test at Edgbaston which India lost by seven wickets. The Indian team was found two overs short of their target by match referee David Boon, who imposed the sanction on the team.

This is India’s third overrate incidence in the WTC 2022-23 cycle which has resulted in docked points. They have first docked two points in Nottingham followed by one in Centurion. Their recent Edgbaston sanction took their tally of docked points to five. Also, the recent penalty saw India slipping to the fourth spot in the WTC Standings with arch-rivals Pakistan being one step ahead of them on the third spot. India which ended the first cycle of the WTC as runners-up have a Points Percentage of 52.08, while Pakistan enjoys a percentage of 52.38. Australia and South Africa continue to lead the table with scores of 77.78 and 71.43 respectively.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to minimum over-rate offenses, Indian team players are charged 20% of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl in the allotted time. In addition, according to Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) playing conditions, a side is fined one point for each over they are short of the target. Considering that two WTC points have been deducted from India’s points total.

There was no need for a formal hearing for the sanctions imposed as India’s Stand-in Captain Jasprit Bumrah pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed sanction. After the completion of the ENG vs IND 5th Test, India will play white-ball series against England beginning with the T20I series on July 7. The T20I leg of the white ball series will be played from July 7 to July 10 followed by the three-match ODI series to be played from July 12 to July 17.
