ENG vs IND 5th Test: Root-Bairstow lead England to a successful run chase as series ends in a draw

ENG vs IND 5th Test: Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put up an iconic 269-run stand that helped England create history by recording their highest successful run chase in the longest format of the game. England defeated India by seven wickets on the final day of the rescheduled test match at Edgbaston to draw the series by 2-2.

India denied their first series win on English soil since 2007. With this, England completes the most successful run chase at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. Also, India lost their first match while defending a total of 350 runs or more.

England began the fifth day on 259/3 with Root staying unbeaten on 76 and Bairstow on 72. The duo’s convincing strokeplay and determination did not change as they continued to punish the Indian bowlers right from the start.

Root and Bairstow continued their purple patch with the bat and scored their 28th and 12th test ton respectively. Root hit the winning single to Jadeja in the 78th over of the game as England finished off the match at 378/3.

The turning point of the match was the 150-run partnership between Root and Bairstow in the final session of Day 4. Though India posted a challenging fourth innings target, the frontline bowlers remained clueless about breaking the defense of the batting stalwarts.

India posted stiff resistance in the first innings and were the favorites to win the game after a commanding performance by Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and skipper Jasprit Bumrah who was leading the squad for the first time. But the heroics of Root and Bairstow put their efforts in vain.

Meanwhile, England continues its winning run in Test cricket as it dominated New Zealand to record a 3-0 win in the last month. The cricketing action now shifts towards the limited-overs game as we anticipate a riveting series between the hosts England and India.

India is set to take on England for a three-match T-20 international series. The first T-20 is scheduled to take place on 7th July at Southampton.
