ENG vs IND: The ECB has finally given a nod to India’s request for playing warm-up matches with County teams ahead of the five-match test series against England. A top Official of the BCCI has confirmed the news to the media on Friday.
Currently, the schedule is being worked upon & probably the practice matches will take place later this year in Durham, where the Indian team is slated to have their pre-series preparations. The team management & the BCCI had requested ECB to organize at least one warm match with the County club if two warm-up matches are not possible.
A spokesperson from the ECB said that the board is working on BCCI’s request. “We are aware of a request from the BCCI to play a three-day warm-up match against a County Select XI as part of the Indian Men’s Test team’s build-up to the five-match Test series. We are working through the operations and COVID-19 protocols to ensure we are able to deliver this and will confirm in due course.”
The ECB has earlier said that warm-up matches were not possible because of the COVID-19 protocols & restrictions. And the unavailability of County teams in England. As per the schedule, India’s test team is currently on a break after the World Test Championship final & will assemble in Durham on July 14. Indian team is scheduled to have a camp at the Emirates Riverside Stadium till August 1, after which they will ahead to Nottingham for the first Test which starts at Trent Bridge on August 4.
The need for warm-up matches was felt after the WTC final when Virat Kohli expressed his frustration over the lack of practice matches before the test series. “We obviously wanted first-class games, which I believe have not been given to us. I don’t know what the reasons for that are. But yeah, other than that I think our preparation time will be ample for us to be ready for the first Test,” the India skipper had said. Team India will lock horns with England in a five-match test series starting from August 4 at Trent Bridge.
