ENG vs PAK 1st ODI: Saqib Mahmood’s four-wicket haul & Dawid Malan’s blistering 68 runs knock guided England’s squad to a superlative nine wickets win in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series at the Sophia Gardens on Thursday.
Earlier this week, three players of England’s main squad tested positive for COVID-19 & the squad was sent into mandatory isolation. As a result, ECB named a second-string squad to play the ODI series against Pakistan.
Chasing a meager 142 runs target, England’s openers Phil Salt & Dawid Malan together scored 22 runs for the first wicket down. However, the blooming stand between the duos came to an end right in the fifth over as Salt was sent back to the Pavilion by Shaheen Afridi. Then Zak Crawley joined David Malan & the duo steadied England’s innings without losing further wickets. Malan 68* & Crawley 58* remained unbeaten as England chased the meager target with 169 balls to spare.
Earlier, sent to bat first, Pakistan was wrapped up for 141 runs within 36 overs. All thanks to Mahmood’s four-wicket haul, which helped in restricting Pakistan to a total of 141 runs. Pakistan got off to a bad start as they lost their first four wickets after scoring just 26 runs. Pakistan’s key players such as Babar Azam (0), Mohammad Rizwan (13) & Saud Shakeel (5) all failed to make a difference with the bat. Fakhar Zaman & Sohaib Maqsood then stitched a brief 53 runs stand for the fifth wicket. But the moment Paksitan gaining the momentum, Maqsood (19) got run out & Pakistan was left reeling at 79/5 in the 19th over.
Soon after Fakhar Zaman (47) fell prey to Matthew Parkinson’s bowling in the 19th over, the entire Pakistan team was wrapped up in no time. Shadab Khan scored 30 runs but it went in vain as visitors’ innings were bundled on 141 runs.
ENG vs PAK 1st ODI Brief Scores
Pakistan 141 all out (Fakhar Zaman 47, Shadab Khan 30, Saqib Mahmood 4-42), England 142/1 (Dawid Malan 68*, Zak Crawley 58*, Shaheen Afridi 1-22)
