The SLC on Monday suspended three Sri Lankan Cricketers- Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka, for breaching COVID-19 bio-bubble restrictions in Durham England. Three Sri Lankan cricketers were caught on camera, roaming on Durham streets & thereby breaching the COVID-19 protocols. It is predicted that the Lanka Cricket board will be sent back home.
“Sri Lanka Cricket executive committee has suspended Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka & Niroshan Dickwella for breaching the bio-bubble and they will be immediately recalled to Sri Lanka,” SLC secretary Mohan De Silva said in a statement.
The Sri Lankan Cricketers were caught on camera, smoking on the streets of Durham on Sunday night by a passerby who shared the video on various social media platforms. The Kusul Perera-led Sri Lanka team is slammed for showing below-average performance & contract dispute with the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.
Earlier the SLC has launched an investigation on the players who have breached the bio-bubble. “An investigation is underway as they have breached the (code of) conduct,” SLC Chief Shammi Silva said, reacting to a video posted by a fan.
In the video, Kusal Mendis was seen with a cigarette in his hand while not wearing a mask. Another cricketer who was seen along with Mendis was Niroshan Dickwella. Soon, Danushka Gunathilaka was seen joining the duo. The ENG vs SL series has come under the limelight after the ICC Match Referee Phil Whitticase was tested positive for COVID-19 in the third T20I. ECB has been forced to replace the entire group of match officials for the upcoming 1st ODI as many of them have been Whitticase’s close contacts.
The Sri Lankan team is under bio-bubble in England & is not allowed to step out of the hotel premises for doing anything other than practice. With the bio-bubble breach, the players might have compromised with the safety of the bubble & it could force the ECB to take strict action against them ahead of the 1st ODI in Durham.
Many fans took to Twitter to criticize Sri Lankan cricketers for displaying poor performance & showing irresponsible behavior at a time when they have suffered a series sweep in the T20I series against England.
