England Police launch criminal investigation into reports of racial abuse in Edgbaston crowd

Scotland Yard, Metropolitan Police Service of the United Kingdom have launched a criminal investigation of racial abuse amongst the crowd present on Day 4 at the rescheduled Test between England and India in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Warwickshire and England Cricket Board have also intervened and begun their separate investigations into the claims after a report emerged publicly on Twitter where several Indian supporters claimed that they had suffered racial abuse from other fans.

The complaints of supporters at Edgbaston were highlighted by Azeem Rafiq, a whistleblower who highlighted the cultural institutional racism that had been charged in Yorkshire, bringing the credibility of the English county in jeopardy.

Chief Executive of Warwickshire Stuart Cain made a public statement regarding the racial abuse claim after England’s win over India on Tuesday. Cain mentioned that they had provided the Police with CCTV images and information, adding that the prosecutors will be banned from entering the Edgbaston stadium and all other venues across the country.

Cain expressed his disappointment over the allegations made by the supporters on Day 4. He asserted that any form of abuse is unacceptable in life or sports and ensured that they will actively support the police in their investigation.

Cain announced to the public that anyone who is pertaining information about the racial abuse at Edgbaston should report to the police on 101. He also urged people to download the Edgbaston app and report any forms of abuse instantly.

Meanwhile, England Cricket Board also expressed their concern and made a public statement disregarding the offenders. ECB cleared that it has a zero-tolerance policy towards racial abuse and strict action will be taken against law breakers.

ECB has issued notices to all county clubs who are hosting the remaining fixtures against India. India will take on England for a three-match T-20 international series that will begin on 7th July followed by a three-match ODI series.
