The ICC released ODI Team Rankings on Wednesday which saw India overtaking Pakistan at the third position after defeating England with massive 10 wickets in the first ODI at Kennington on Tuesday.
Earlier, India was placed fourth in the Rankings Table with 105 points in their kitty while Pakistan was placed third with 106 points. But after registering a thumping win over England, India gained two more points & reached a total of 108 points. This move helped India to move up among the top three in the Rankings table while Pakistan fell down to the fourth position. New Zealand are currently leading the ICC ODI Team Rankings with 126 points followed by England which is placed second with 122 points.
With two more ODIs left in the England series & three more ODIs scheduled for later in July, India have an opportunity to extend their lead over Pakistan in the ICC Team ODI Rankings & overtake England at second position. However, India could drop below Pakistan and down to fourth if they lose the final two matches of the series against England.
Talking about India’s first ODI against England, riding on the back of Jasprit Bumrah’s 6-wicket haul & Rohit Sharma (76* off 58 balls) & Shikhar Dhawan’s (31*) blistering 110 run-stand, India won the match with more than 31 overs to spare.
While India would be aiming to claim the series by winning the third ODI on Thursday at Lord’s, questions still arise over Virat Kohli’s fitness. Former India Captain had missed the opening match of the series due to a groin injury which he sustained during the third T20I in Nottingham on Sunday. The status of his injury is still unknown & there is doubt about his availability for the second ODI.
The Groin injury comes as a major setback for Virat Kohli who has been already going through a prolonged lean patch. He scored 11 and 20 in the Edgbaston Test that India lost to draw the series 2-2, and then was dismissed for 1 and 11 in the second and third T20Is. Recovering on time & playing in the rest of two ODIs is crucial for Virat as he has been rested for the Caribbean ODI series, starting from July 22, along with four other senior players Rohit, Rishabh Pant, Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya. However, there are chances of Virat Kohli featuring in the West Indies five-match T20I series beginning from July 29, the squad for which will be announced in next coming days.
