ICC T20 World Cup: Both the ICC & BCCI are considering Muscat as their second venue for the T20 World Cup. Now Oman’s Cricket Association has expressed its interest in hosting the Mega Event, “if given an opportunity”.
The ICC Board has given the BCCI time till the end of June to take a call on whether the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 can be held in India or it will have to be shifted to UAE. “The BCCI and the ICC need to take a call first on this issue. We would be delighted to be a potential venue for it,” Oman Cricket Chief Pankaj Khimji told media on Friday.
Oman Cricket Chief, Pankaj Khilji stated that Oman has an advanced infrastructure needed to host the T20 World Cup. And have also got a green signal from the ICC Board to host the Mega event. “Our facilities have the approval of the ICC to stage T20Is, ODIs and we also got the ICC green signal to host Test matches this year,” he added.
Further, as per the reports in TOI, there are chances that Oman may stage the T20 World Cup Qualifiers if the World Cup is staged in the UAE. However, even if the tournament is shifted out of the country, India will still retain their hosting rights, as stated by the ICC in a virtual meeting held on 1st June.
“The ICC Board has requested management focus its planning efforts for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 on the event being staged in the UAE with the possibility of including another venue in the Middle East,” the ICC said in a media release on Tuesday. “A final decision on the host country will be taken later this month. The Board also confirmed that the BCCI will remain the hosts of the event regardless of where the event is played.” added the Media Release
The BCCI had earlier proposed nine venues for the ICC T20 World Cup. But an ICC team that was scheduled to visit India for a recce, canceled their trip due to the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19.
