IND vs NZ 1st T20I: Rohit-Surya- the ‘unsung heroes of India’s nerve-wracking win
India’s chase was started on a high note with Rohit Sharma scoring 48 off 36 balls & Suryakumar Yadav’s 62 off 40 laid the foundation of India’s nerve stealing win. The Indian team was marching towards a comfortable win but soon the Black Caps made a comeback into the match in the final four overs. However in the end New Zealand’s bowling attack failed as India registered a closely fought win in the 20th over with Rishabh Pant hitting the winning runs for the hosts.
This match marked the start of a new era in the Indian cricket team with Rohit Sharma taking up the responsibilities of T20 Captain & Rahul Dravid being appointed as India’s Head Coach. With both the teams resting their key players as part of their workload management it was an even contest between India & New Zealand.
During the chase, India reached 50 runs in just five overs with Rohit & KL Rahul leading the innings. Rohit got going with back-to-back fours off Tim Southee in the third over before unleashing his signature front pull shot on the final ball of the over. The seasoned pace duo of Southee and Trent Boult were put under pressure by the Indian openers.
IND vs NZ 1st T20I: Suryakumar Yadav- the rising star of India’s white-ball team
KL Rahul (15 off 14) got into the act of scoring runs by hitting a huge six over deep square leg off Boult delivery before Rohit Sharma hit another pull shot to score 21 from an over. Soon, KL Rahul fell prey to a soft delivery from Mitchell Santner in the 6th over to give New Zealand its first breakthrough. After KL Rahul’s dismissal, Suryakumar Yadav came on the crease in place of Virat Kohli. Suryakumar was successful in steadying India’s innings as his 40 ball 62 runs stint helped India to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.
First off, he stitched a 59-run partnership with skipper Sharma for the second wicket, and also got to his second fifty with a six in the 15th over. He guided India towards victory after a strong start given by the openers. He added 35 runs with Rishabh Pant and raced the total to 144 runs before Boult rattled his stumps in the 17th over.
India’s scoreboard read 144/3 with the ‘Men in Blue’ in need of 21 runs off 20 balls. New Zealand bowlers put their every strength to restrict India from chasing the total. Tim Southee got his first wicket of the match after he removed Shreyas Iyer for a paltry 5 runs. India needed 10 runs off the last over when Daryl Mitchell dismissed the debutant Venkatesh Iyer (4 runs) and took the game close. India needed four runs to win & the hosts ensured that they didn’t give it a miss with Rishabh Pant striking a boundary & scoring winning runs for India.
IND vs NZ 1st T20I: India’s bowling attack restricted Kiwis to put up a massive total
Earlier sent to bat first, Martin Guptill & Chapman ensured that New Zealand brought up a mammoth 180+ total but their dream was broken by Ravichandran Ashwin who double-struck in one over to put a brake on New Zealand’s run-machines. Ravichandran Ashwin was the star bowler for India who scalped 2/23 in four overs. His fiery spell was well supported with Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 2/24 in four overs.
Venkatesh Iyer was handed his T20I debut while NZ made four changes to their playing XI. Bhuvneshwar Kumar who looked out of sync during the T20 World Cup 2021 got crucial wickets right in his first over. Soon Bhuvneshwar caught Daryl Mitchell with the help of a fuller delivery.
Chapman-Guptill heroics with the bat guided New Zealand to a power-pack 164
NZ reached 41 for one in the powerplay after Deepak Chahar conceeded 15 runs in just one over. Chapman pulled off 10 runs in the 10th over to help New Zealand reach 65 for one. Three crucial overs followed with Chapman & Guptill accelerated runs for the Black Caps.
Chapman smashed a maximum & a boundary to amass 15 runs in an over & brought up his maiden fifty for New Zealand. To put a pause on New Zealand’s flow of runs Ashwin was brought back into the attack in the 14th over where he struck twice thereby reducing New Zealand to 123 in 15 overs.
With Guptill in full flow, even 200 total seemed on the card as he took the black Caps scores to 150 runs mark. But soon the dreamy stint of the opener was brought to end in the 18th over as Deepak Chahar came to bowl his second over & scalped the prized wicket of Guptill with the help of a brilliant catch by Shreyas Iyer at the deep wicket. Guptill went back after scoring 70 runs & with two overs remaining New Zealand managed to add just 12 runs to take their scoreboard to 164/6 in 20 overs.
