IND vs NZ 1st Test: Shreyas Iyer made a dream start to their test career by smashing a scintillating century against the Black Caps in Kanpur on Day 2 of the 1st test to become the 16th India to score a hundred on test debut. Sunil Gavaksar handed the debutant Iyer hsi test cap on day of the 1ts test. Shreyas Iyer has brought up his maiden test century in just 157 balls.
Lala Amarnath, Deepak Shodhan, AG Kripal Singh, Abbas Ali Baig, Hanumant Singh, Gundappa Vishwanath, Surender Amarnath, Mohammad Azharuddin, Pravin Amre, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, and Prithvi Shaw are the other 15 Indian batsmen to have scored a hundred on their Test debut.
Shreyas Iyer is the second batter on the list to reach the milestone at the same venue after India’s Vishwanath. Shreyas Iyer also becomes the third Indian to score a century on his test debut against New Zealand. The other two Indians who have achieved this feat are Arjan Kripal Singh 1955 & Surinder Amarnath. Shreyas Iyer is also the third player from Mumbai after Rohit Sharma & Prithvi Shaw smash a century on test debut.
Earlier during IND vs NZ 1st test day 1, Shreyas Iyer & Ravindra Jadeja guided India to a competitive total of 258/4 at stumps. Shreyas Iyer started his innings at a brisk rate to get used to Green Park’s sluggish pitch before switching to the attacking mode against New Zealand spinners.
Speaking about Shreyas Iyer’s knock on test debut, Laxman said that he didn’t look reckless at any stage of his fiery knock. There was a ‘Mumbai khadoo’s schooling in the way he played Jamieson & Southee with caution, reckoned former legendary cricketer.
On Day 1 Shreyas was successful in bringing up his maiden test fifty & became the 30th Indian to hit a half-century on debut. Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 75 & Ravindra Jadeja’s 50 were crucial in taking India to a respectable total of 258 at stumps on Day 1 of the first test.
