IND vs NZ 1st Test: Shreyas Iyer to make his test debut in Kanpur confirms Captain Ajinkya Rahane

IND vs NZ 1st Test: Shreyas Iyer is all set to make his test debut in Kanpur on Thursday confirmed India’s stand-in captain on the eve of the first test against New Zealand. The first test of the two-match test series against New Zeaalnd will commence at the Green Park Stadium from November 25.

Shreyas Iyer gets a chance to make his test debut as India’s mains Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant have been rested for the 1st Test. Earlier this week KL Rahul got injured which means that Shubman Gill who was preparing to bat in the middle order will open the innings along with Mayank Agarwal at the top of the order.

“Shreyas Iyer is going to make his debut,” Ajinkya Rahane said while addressing the press in Kanpur on Wednesday.

Shreyas Iyer who made his debut for India in 2017 had to wait for four long years to get included in India’s Test squad. Shreyas has an outstanding first-class record amassing 4592 runs in 54 matches at an average of 52.18. Iyer has hit 12 first-class hundreds with his best score being 202 not out.

Suryakumar Yadav was added to the squad as KL Rahul’s replacement & it was expected that he will be in contention to play in the middle-order but teh golden opportunity was handed to Shreyas Iyer who was initially included in the original squad for the two-match test series.

A Glimpse of Shreyas Iyer’s Journey in International Cricket

Shreyas Iyer’s journey in competitive cricket over the last year was like a perfect roller-coaster ride. Though he has successfully guided Delhi Capitals to the final of the IPL 2020 in the UAE, he injured his shoulder seriously during a home series against England & was out of action for approximately 6 months. Iyer was not a part of India’s squad touring England but after recovering from his injury he made a solid comeback during the 2nd leg of IPL 2021.

Rishabh Pant replaced Shreyas Iyer as Delhi Capitals captain who continued to lead the team during the secodn half of the IPL 2021. Shreyas Iyer also missed a chance to feature in India’s T20 World Cup squad but he was included to India’s squad for the recently ended T20I series against New Zealand.

After getting the golden opportunity to feature in India’s Test squad, Shreyas Iyer will hope to make an early impression in his test career considering the competition for the middle order berth. Shreyas Iyer might be rested for the second test to make a way for Virat Kohli who will return to the squad for the second test starting from december 3 in Mumbai.
