Mohammed Shami on Tuesday becomes the third fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 test wickets. The 31-year-old veteran pacer achieved this feat when he registered a five-wicket haul on day 3 of the 1st test against South Africa at the Supersport Park in Centurion on December 28.
Mohammed Shami registered his 200th wicket in his 55th test match, behind Kapil Dev who has reached the milestone in the 50th test match & Javagal Srinath who had registered his 200th wicket in his 54th test in 2001. Coincidentally Srinath’s feat also came in South Africa.
Mohammed Shami reached the milestone in style with a six-wicket haul in the first test against South Africa by displaying a superlative bowling show on Day three of the first test. Mohammed Shami ran through the Proteas top order scalping the prized wickets of Keegan Petersen and Aiden Markram before returning to get a well-set Temba Bavuma.
Though Jasprit Bumrah was out of action for more than an hour due to a twisted ankle, Shami led India’s bowling attack brilliantly as South Africa were bowled out for 197 runs, trailing India’s first innings total by 130 runs.
Mohammed Shami becomes the ninth fastest Indian to reach the 200 test wickets mark. R Ashwin is the fastest Indian to reach 200 test wickets as he reached the milestone in his 37th test while Pakistan’s leg-spinner Yasir Shah is the fastest pacer to reach the landmark in his 33rd Test.
Mohammed Shami made his test debut in 2013 & soon become a mainstay of the Indian pace attack. Under the leadership of former Bowling Coach Bharat Arun, Mohammed Shami was an integral part of India’s glorious test series win in Australia in 2018-2019 & his impressive form continued in India’s tour of England in 2021 where India took a 2-1 lead in the five-match test series. Shami picked up as many as 47 Test wickets in 2018, 33 in 2019 as he formed a lethal pairing with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, and Ishant Sharma.
