IND vs SL 3rd ODI: Avishka Fernando’s 76 runs & Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s 65 runs guided Sri Lanka to a spectacular win against India in the final ODI to avoid a series whitewash. However, visitors clinched the ODI series by 2-1 scores. Riding on the back of spectacular performances Sri Lanka defeated India by three wickets.
Chasing a mammoth total of 225 runs, Sri Lanka got off to a good start by scoring 35 runs in the first five overs. Krishnappa Gowtham claimed his maiden international wicket by dismissing Binod Bhanuka in the sixth over. In the first 10 overs, Sri Lanka scored a quick 55 runs with one wicket down. Avishka Fernando & Bhanuka Rajapaksa ruled the crease as they stitched 109 runs blistering stand.
Fernando scored his fifth half-century to put Sri Lanka in control of the chase in Colombo. Rajapaksa also brought up his maiden ODI half-century to help Sri Lanka chase the runs comfortably. However, visitors bounced back by removing Rajapaksa & Dhanajaya De Silva from the crease to restrict hosts in their run-chase. India led a perfect fightback by removing Charith Asalanka & Dasun Shanaka in successive overs.
In the last ten overs, Sri Lanka needed just ten runs to win but Rahul Chahar struck again to give India another major breakthrough. However, Akila Dhanajaya & Ramesh Mendis helped Sri Lanka to get over the line in the 39th over.
Earlier Praveen Jayawickrama & Akila Dhananjaya scalped three wickets each to limit India to 225 runs in 50 overs. India was bowled at 225 runs with Prithvi Shaw & Sanju Samson scoring 49 & 46 runs respectively. Surayakumar scored 40 runs before getting trapped in front of the stumps. None of the India batsmen could score a half-century in the third & the final ODI.
Earlier opting to bat first, India got off to a poor start as they lost captain Shikhar Dhawan right in the third over. However, Prithvi Shaw steadied India’s submerging innings by weaving 74 runs stand for the second wicket with Sanju Samson. Shaw fell short of just one run to register his maiden ODI half-century in the 16th over. Samson also went back to the pavilion a few overs later before rain stopped the play. After the match resumed India was heading behind as they were losing wickets at regular intervals & were wrapped up at 225/10. The match was reduced to 47 overs per side due to rain.
