IND vs SL: What comes as a major blow to Sri Lanka cricket ahead of the white ball series tour against India is a player in its alternate bubble in Colombo who has tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.
The alternate bubble has been created as a backup for the India series. The player who has tested positive was staying with the alternative group at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo. However, the Visiting India team is staying at a different hotel, reported ESPNcricinfo.
Sri Lanka batting coach grant glower & team analyst GT Niroshan has already tested positive for COVID-19 due to which the limited-overs series between India & Sri Lanka has been rescheduled. The BCCI & Sri Lanka Cricket on Saturday announced the revised itinerary for India’s white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
“The tour comprising of 3 ODIs & 3 T20Is will now start from July 18th, 2021”, read an official statement from the BCCI. The ODI series will now start on July 18 while the T20Is will commence from July 25. The three ODIs will be palyed on 18,20 & 23 while the three T20Is will be played on July 25, 27 & 29 respectively.
Niroshan & Flower had tested positive for the Delta variant of COVID-19, which is more contagious. The Sri Lanka squad that was going to complete the quarantine & enter the bio-bubble on Friday will now be forced to spend more two days in isolation & will undergo another RT-PCR test.
Earlier on Tuesday, the news of three England players testing positive for COVID-19 had raised concerns as Sri Lanka last played against England in three ODIs & T20Is. Sri Lanka palyed against England in three ODIs & three T20Is & the squad returned back to Sri Lanka on Tuesday evening. The Sri Lankan squad failed to win even a single match on their England tour & suffered a 3-0 defeat in the T20I series & a 2-0 loss in the ODI series.
