IND vs SL: Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s spell-bounding four wickets haul guided India to a clinical win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I on Sunday. Bhuvneshwra Kumar scalped four wickets while Deepak Chahar fetched two wickets as India defeated Sri Lanka by 38 runs.
Indian bowlers wrapped up Sri Lanka’s innings at 126 runs in the 19th over to take a crucial 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. Chasing an average 165 runs target, the hosts got off to a good start by scoring 20 runs in the first two overs. However, Krunal Pandya struck to remove Minod Bhanuka & gave India its first breakthrough in the third over. Sri Lanka was reduced to 46/1 in six overs & was going well before they suffered another blow. Yuzvendral Chahal removed Dhanajaya De Silva & Bhuvneshwar dismissed Avishka Fernando to bring India back on winning momentum.
However, for hosts, Charith Asalenka kept Sri Lanka’s hopes alive as he smashed regular boundaries & sixes. He stitched a crucial stand with Ashen Bandara before Hardik Pandya dismissed Bandara to send Sri Lanka on backfoot. Sri Lanka required 61 runs in 6 overs & then came Deepak Chahar who scalped two wickets in his over to end hosts every hope of winning. With wickets falling at regular intervals Sri Lanka fell 39 runs short of the target.
Earlier for Sri Lanka Dushmantha Chameera & Wanindu Hasaranga scalped two wickets each to restrict India to 164/5. Sent in to bat first, India got off to a poor start as Prithvi Shaw was dismissed for a duck. Captain Shikhar Dhawan & Sanju Samson revived India’s innings by bringing up 50 runs in the powerplay. However, Sri Lanka bounced back by removing Samson in the seventh over. Dhawan along with Suryakumar Yadav took India’s scoreboard to the 100 runs mark in just 12 overs & stitched a fifty runs partnership. Just when things started improving for India, they lost both Dhawan & Suryakumar in successive overs. However in the end Isha Kishan came on the crease & hit 20 runs off 14 balls to help India reach an average total of 164 runs in 20 overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been awarded as the ‘Player Of the Match’ for scalping four wickets & guiding India towards a nervy win by restricting Sri Lanka at 126 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Bhuvneshwar fetched four wickets conceding 22 runs, bowling at an enticing economy rate of 6.30.
