Latest Cricket News: New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry will join the national team in Dhaka as a replacement for Finn Allen for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Bangladesh starting on September 1.
Henry has been included in the squad after Allen tested positive for COVID-19 on his arrival in Dhaka. Though a replacement has been named by the team management, Allen will stay with the New Zealand squad & will be constantly monitored by the team’s doctor Pat McHugh.
Matt Henry was initially included in the squad that was scheduled to play three ODIs & five T20Is in Pakistan starting from September 17 however now he will leave from New Zealand on August 30 to join the national team in Dhaka.
“Matt’s clearly not a like-for-like replacement for Finn, but he expands our selection options and, in the current circumstances, is the best equipped to join the side at such short notice,” said head coach Gary Stead.
“And, in the current environment, we remain mindful of the need to carefully balance player workloads.”We’re not prepared to risk anyone’s well-being by asking them to commit to extremely long periods away from home”, Gary added.
The New Zealand Cricket Board has taken the decision to send Henry to Dhaka to join the national team after considering the fact that he has been vaccinated twice for COVID-19 & and has a managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) bed allocated for his return. Stead also highlighted the fact that he didn’t consider including the players currently in the UK due to the seven-day isolation period they would face on arrival into Dhaka.
On the other hand, Matt Henry is very much excited to join the national team in Dhaka for the upcoming T20I series against Bangaldesh. I haven’t been to Bangladesh. It is my first time for me there. “I have played in India and UAE. I have experience in sub-continent conditions so I am going there with a lot of confidence. There were a lot of low-scoring games in the last series there, so looking forward to the challenge. I played domestic T20 cricket last season, so I will fall back on that experience”, Henry said.
