Leading team India’s bowling attack on Day 5 of IND vs NZ 1st Test at Kanpur, Ravichandran Ashwin has surpassed veteran Spinner Harbhajan Singh to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in test format.
Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed the prized wicket of Tom Latham to mark India’s comeback in the ongoing IND vs NZ 1st Test. It was Ravichandran Ashwin who scalped the prized wicket of Will Young on Day 4 to give India its first breakthrough. Ensuring that hosts start their from where they left on Day 5, Ashwin removed Tom Latham for 52 in the 55th over of New Zealand’s innings at Kanpur. The wicket of opener Tom Latham became special for the off-spinner as with Latham’s wicket Ashwin surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in test cricket.
Harbhajan Singh has played 103 matches for team India scalping 417 wickets in his illustrious test career span while Ashwin has scalped 418 wickets in 81 tests to surpass Harbhajan & become the third-highest wicket-taker in test format. The star off-spinner has made his test debut against West Indies at the famous Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2011.
Ravichandran Ashwin is behind bowling legends Kapil Dev (434) & Anil Kumble (619) in the list of highest wicket-takers for India. Kapil Dev has scalped 434 wickets from 131 matches in test format while Anil Kumble is India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in test cricket by scalping 619 wickets from 132 tests he has played.
Upcoming Milestones for Ashwin
R Ashwin will now target to overcome Kapil dev’s 434 wickets record to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India in test cricket. Ravichandran Ashwin has scalped 625 wickets across 241 matches he has palyed across all formats. Kapil Dev is the country’s third-highest wicket take across all formats with 687 scalps. Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble have 711 and 956 scalps respectively.
When it comes to test cricket, Muttiah Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in World Cricket by bagging 800 wickets in his kitty. Shane Warne of Australia is placed second with 708 scalps. Pacer James Anderson is placed third with 632 wickets. Glenn McGrath is also placed in the top 5 list of highest wicket-takers with 563 wickets.
Ashwin now needs 3 wickets to go past South Africa’s Shaun Pollock (421 wickets) and a few more wickets to eclipse Richard Hadlee (431).
