IND vs NZ 2nd Test: Mayank Agarwal ends his two year wait by registering his fourth test Century

IND vs NZ 2nd test: India’s opener batsman Mayank Agarwal ended his two-year-long wait by registering his fourth test century. Mayank delivered under pressure & hit his fourth test century on day 1 of the secodn final test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

Mayank Agarwal brought up his century in 196 balls as the opener stood strong by dealing with the spin threat from New Zealand better than the rest of his teammates including Virat Kohli & Cheteshwar Pujara who got dismissed for ducks off Ajaz Patel’s delivery who ran a riot in Mumbai.

Mayank’s last century came in November 2019 when he hit a scintillating double ton against Bangladesh in Indore. Ever since Mayank’s double century, he had been facing a lean patch in test cricket as he managed to bring up just one half-century in seven tests he has palyed. After Mayank’s consistent poor performances his position in the team was questioned as he failed to deliver even in the first test against New Zealand where he managed to score just 13 & 17 in the two innings. With Virat Kohli returning for the 2nd Test after a break, speculation was rife that Mayank might be dropped.

However, he managed to retain his place in teh team as Ajinkya Rahane who suffered a hamstring injury made way for Virat Kohli in the Playing XI.

IND vs NZ 2nd Test: A Glimpse of Mayank’s Scintillating Knock

Mayank Agarwal proved why he deserves to be in the top order by keeping the kiwis spinners at the bay & bringing up his much-awaited fourth century in test cricket.

Right after the fall of Virat Kohli’s wicket, Mayank Agarwal made his intentions clear by attacking New Zealand’s spinner by utilizing his foot in great effect which Kohli, Rahane, and Pujara have failed to do consistently in the recent past.

Mayank Agarwal smashed New Zealand spinners all around the park by hitting three sixes & 11 boundaries & stitching dominating partnerships with Shreyas Iyer & Shubman Gill. Mayank Agarwal showed his capability to deal with lethal spin attacks & was successful in demoralizing them on Day one of the second test against the Black Caps.

Earlier after winning the toss on Friday & chose to bat first considering the weather conditions in Mumbai. The pitch was under the wraps and there was a bit of moisture on the surface. However, Mayank and Shubman saw off the new-ball threat and added an 80-run opening stand. But soon Shubman-Mayank’s flourishing partnership was broken by Mumbai-based New Zealand’s spinner Ajaz Patel who dismissed Gill with a floated delivery that the young opener edged to first slip.

In his next over, Ajazx Patel shattered India’s batting order by removing Pujara and Kohli in the same over as India slipped from 80 for 0 to 80 for 3. However, Mayank & Iyer steadied India’s submerging innings by bringing up an 80 run stand for the 4th wicket before Ajaz returned to remove Iyer for 18, making full use of the extra bounce on offer on the Wankhede pitch for the spinners.
