Pieter Seelaar calls time on his International career due to persistent back injury

Netherlands all-rounder & Captain Pieter Seelaar who had led the National team for the last four years has retired from all forms of cricket with immediate effect due to a persistent injury. Scott Edwards who has scored two half-centuries in the ongoing ODI series against England & captained the Netherlands team in the second ODI against England will take over as Netherlands Captain.

“Since 2020, my back problems got worse to such an extent that – much to my regret – I am no longer able to give everything I’ve got,” Seelaar said in a statement released shortly before England completed their run chase.

Roland Lefebvre, the KNCB’s high-performance manager, said, “Pieter’s input has been priceless, first as a player and later also as a captain. His management style is open, honest, and transparent, which has always been appreciated by the players.

“He can look back upon a wonderful international career which unfortunately comes to an untimely end. We wish him the very best for the future.”

A Glimpse of Prolific Seelaar’s Career Achievements

Pieter Seelaar was appointed as the Captain of the Netherlands team in the year 2018 after Peter Borren announced his retirement. Seelaar’s biggest achievement was to lead the team to win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 qualifiers. He led the Netherlands team against several nations in the ODI Super League.

Seelaar went ahead to finish his career as Netherland’s most-capped T20I player, their leading T20I wicket-taker, their second-most-capped ODI player, and their joint-highest ODI wicket-taker. In a career span of 17 years, Seelaar featured in 300 matches for the Netherlands across all formats. He was an integral part of their two biggest wins against England, at the 2009 and 2014 T20 World Cups.

However, his bright career suffered a dent in recent years after the former Captain sustained a back injury which further got elevated in Netherland’s defeat against England in Friday’s first ODI. As a result, he missed the second ODI which England comfortably won comfortably by six wickets to clinch the series by 2-0. Edwards led the team in Seelaar’s absence during the second ODI.

We at Cricketflicker congratulate Pieter Seelar for his exemplary career & wish best of luck in his future endeavors.
