SA vs IRE: South Africa beats Ireland by 21 runs, takes a 1-0 lead

SA vs IRE: South Africa continued their winning run as they stunned Ireland by 21 runs in the first T20I of the two-match T20I series. They took an inevitable 1-0 lead in the series with a blazing all-round performance in the first game.

Winning the toss on a bright sunny day at Gloucestershire, South African skipper Keshav Maharaj elected to bat first. With a resemblance to an exemplary T-20 side, South Africa put up a respectable total of 211/5 in their 20 overs.

Hendricks-Markram’s gleaming knocks laid the foundation of a solid win

Aiming to provide an accelerated start, South Africa lost two quick wickets in the form of Quinton de Kock (7) and Rassie Van der Dussen (10), reducing South Africa to 45-2. However, Reeza Hendricks (74) and Aiden Markram (56) soon blew the woes, by weaving a match-winning stand of 112 runs for the third wicket. Their blooming stand was soon broken by Delany who first struck to remove Markram for 56 off 27 balls followed by Hendricks for 74 runs off 53 balls.

In the end, the cameos of Tristan Stubbs (24) and Dwaine Pretorius (21) helped South Africa to cross the 200-run mark.

For Ireland, Gareth Delany was the pick of the bowlers who recorded a figure of 2/31. Andrew McBrine (1/12) and Joshua Little (1/55) chipped in a wicket apiece.

Ireland succumbed to Tabraiz & Shamsi’s fiery bowling spells

Chasing a challenging total of 212, Ireland executed a stunning response as they were restricted to 190/9 and lost by only 21 runs. Openers Paul Stirling (18) and skipper Andrew Balbirnie (14) failed to provide a solid start as Ireland witnessed a major batting order collapse and were struggling at 84-5 at one point.

Lorcan Tucker (78) and George Dockrell (43) took the matter into their hands & put up a spectacular 86-run stand for the sixth wicket but their efforts went in vain as no other Irish batsman was able to cross the 20-run mark.

As a result, Proteas were restricted to 190 runs in 20 overs registering a narrowly fought 21 runs win over Ireland. For South Africa, skipper Keshav Maharaj (2/29), Tabraiz Shamsi (2/27), and Wayne Parnell (2/36) lead the bowling attack by claiming a couple of wickets each whereas Lungi Ngidi (1/39) and Dwaine Pretorius (1/44) picked a wicket apiece.

The final T-20I of the series is scheduled to take place tomorrow at the Gloucestershire Cricket Stadium.
