SL vs PAK 1st Test: The first match of the two-match Test series between Sri Lanka & Pakistan reached its conclusory phase with Pakistan having an upper hand over the Lankan side at Stumps on Day 4.
After wrapping Sri Lanka’s innings for 337 in the second innings, Pakistan needed 342 runs to win. With a gutsy batting performance throughout Day 4, Pakistan finished at 222/3 and is only 120 runs away from a comfortable victory.
Sri Lanka resumed their innings with batsman Dinesh Chandimal and tailender Prabath Jayasuriya taking the positions at the crease with the motive of expanding their lead. However, soon their blooming stand was broken as Jayasuriya was sent back to the hut whereas Chandimal remained not out on 94.
Chasing a challenging total of 342, Pakistan got off to a gleaming start, thanks to the spectacular performances of openers Abdullah Shafique (112*) and Imam-ul-Haq (35). The duo had weaved a stand of 87 runs for the first wicket before Haq was trapped charging down the lane to a stumping off Ramesh Mendis.
Azhar Ali who came to bat at No. 3 joined hands with Chandimal but failed to get going for long as he was dismissed for a mere score of 6 runs off Prabath Jayasuriya. Caught in trouble, skipper Babar Azam came to the rescue and put up a stunning show.
Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam set a stupendous partnership of 104 runs to keep the visitors scoreboard ticking. Babar Azam scored a fabulous knock of 55 runs whereas Abdullah Shafique remained unbeaten on 112. However soon Babar Azam was sent packing & then came Mohammed Rizwan on the crease who joined Shafique to continue Pakistan’s proceedings.
Shafique and Rizwan will be on the crease at the start of Day 5 to anchor the chase for Pakistan. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will aim to remove the set batsmen and grab quick wickets in order to steal a victory from the visitors.
